Shoe designer and artist Mark Schwartz has been creating his designs and capturing them on paper for over twenty five years.Mark's unique shoe paintings are collected by clients all over the world,most of his work are extensions of designs he has created over the years.Schwartz views the shoe as the most important and artistic of all the accessories which in turn creates a unique and interesting art form. After 30 years of designing chic stilettos and sandals in the tradition of his mentors, Roger Vivier, and Andy Warhol who pushed him into painting shoes, Mark Schwartz knows a thing or two about what makes a good shoe. While most designers easily recognize the artful craftsmanship of this everyday accessory, few have actually dedicated years to capturing its subtle beauty on paper as Mark Schwartz has done throughout his prolific career. So with paintbrush in hand, he has been transforming this three-dimensional object into a visually provocative subject matter with his vibrant, color-saturated paintings.

Schwartz’s paintings capture the unique aesthetics of the pop art movement, while also incorporating the rhythmic brush strokes of one of his idols, Jackson Pollack. In his paintings, the shoes dance in a colorful sweep of abstract, geometric shapes—conveying that very same movement and grace women experience when wearing a stunning pair of his stilettos.

Schwartz, as both a designer and painter, proves that the shoe can be reinvented again and again, but it is through his paintings, that this every day object is elevated into an iconic art form.

It all starts with the art I make. Because if I lose sight of that then everything else becomes meaningless. The only reason it is possible for me to make a living from my art is that there are people out there who find something special in it, something that resonates with them and ultimately something worth paying for.

Hola Mark

Last week I was seeing the Daily Painters web site and saw a painting of you titled Stance. I can not avoid to send you my commentaries. It is a very artistic piece, a sort of dance of the seven veils, where you discover it layer over layer. At the first far look it seems an abstract painting, just hurry busy color spots going quickly somewhere. The painting brings a movement sensation in all senses, there are synchronic and soft vertical wavy movements and there are a serial color lines moving along the horizontal plane. When you are nearer it can see to appear may be some organics shapes joined one to other by shivering lines … jellyfishes ? a chinese dragon? …no … you finally discover they are shoes... great! The same vertical color lines you saw at the beginning mutate in those characteristic fast ballerina movements although shoes are in a static stance. Beautiful color mix, specially oranges and purples. It is interesting how color also acts like other element of continuity inside the piece, just a touch of color coming from the above couple of shoes and it reaches a stronger joined composition.

A painting full of color and movement which playfully play with your mind along all the discovering process. Very good job Mark.

I recently bought one of Mark's "Shoe" paintings. Mark's paintings are
unusual in many ways. First, he's a guy and he paints womens' shoes, and
does a great job of it! He uses much or all of the paper and always adds
just the right colors. By the time I got my painting in the mail and got
it unrolled and could really study it, I was hoping he could go the next
step and I could actually OWN those very shoes! I guarantee if he went
"the next step" and really did make them, the only problem he would have
would be to keep them in stock!

MY WORK

I have been painting shoes as art for over twenty plus years, it is a personal passion of mine that i have enjoyed sharing with thousands of clients around the world.
My work is varied, I do have paintings in my archives for sale, if there is something special in mind just drop me an email, I do a lot of commissioned work as well, I sometimes get clients who want me to paint their favorite pair of shoes, they send me a picture or the shoes themselves.
Most of my work is based off of designs that I have done in real shoes over the years, being a working shoe designer I have a lot of ideas and enjoy putting them down and expressing them in my artwork.
I enjoy reaching all types of clients with all different budgets in mind.

THOUGHTS

I have been designing shoes in Italy for my entire career and I have had the good fortune to work with some of the most recognized names in our industry.
In 1985 while working with Roger Vivier I met Andy Warhol and to make a long story short, it was Warhol who encouraged me to pursue my paintings of shoes as you view them today.
My work is a part of who I am and is a part of my love for shoes and for the life and joy that they bring to so many people around the world.
I am often asked the question, what brings me more satisfaction to design a shoe or to paint a shoe and capture it in a painting?
I love both but I must say that painting a shoe as art, taking a sketch or scribble of an idea and making it into a painting that hangs in someone's home, office or store gives me an exceptional feeling of personal joy and happiness.
